Students decide early whether they belong .

Playfair is a live, facilitator-led event that blends audience participation, non-competitive team-building, and comedy, turning a room full of strangers into a connected cohort.

Why Playfair

Connection gives students a reason to come back.

Every student arrives with questions they may not say out loud. Will I find my people? Will I belong here? Is this somewhere I can stay? Playfair makes the answer an easy yes. In under ninety minutes, students meet more people than they usually would on their own, through a shared experience that is active, welcoming, and built for everyone. They leave with familiar faces, new connections, and a stronger sense that they are part of a community.

The big idea

Students rarely leave because of the coursework. They leave because they never found their people.

Every student walking onto your campus is quietly asking the same thing. Will I find my group? Will anyone here know my name by next week? Here is why a single Playfair event moves the number universities care about most.

Fifty years. 400+ universities every year.

For fifty years, Playfair has helped North American universities build that connection at scale. It now runs at 400+ universities each year, with most bringing it back annually. That same program has arrived in Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore — a simple, fun and proven way to help first-year students feel connected from the start.

Playfair is now growing through international partners across the US, Canada and Thailand, bringing the same proven experience to more students around the world.

The impact

Why belonging keeps students enrolled.

The first few weeks of university matter. Students are finding their way, working out where they fit, and deciding whether this new place feels like somewhere they can stay.

For many students, that decision is shaped by the people they meet early: a familiar face in a lecture, a study group that becomes friends, someone who saves them a seat, or the feeling that someone would notice if they did not show up.

That kind of connection can change the whole first-year experience. A student who finds people early has more reasons to come back. A student who does not can end up trying to manage the transition alone, and may be more likely to quietly drift away before they ever really settle in.

What the research shows

In Australia, the national Student Experience Survey found that 18.3% of undergraduates seriously considered leaving. In New Zealand, belonging is recognised as a key driver of retention and completion, especially for Māori and Pacific learners. In Singapore, where graduation rates are high, the challenge often shows up less as dropout and more as first-year stress, pressure, and isolation.

Across these contexts, the reasons students struggle often have less to do with coursework alone and more to do with pressure, loneliness, and the sense of not fitting in, especially for students away from home for the first time.

What Playfair changes

When Playfair's impact has been measured, the results are strong. An analysis of U.S. Department of Education IPEDS data across 32 North American universities found first-year retention rose by 1% to 11% in the year after Playfair was introduced.

In U.S. budget terms, that represents roughly US$121,000 at smaller campuses to more than US$2.6 million at larger ones in a single year. These are North American figures, but the point is relevant here too: early connection is not just good for student experience, it can also affect whether students stay, and whether they thrive.

Why Playfair works

Playfair works because connection is designed, not left to chance. In one shared experience, students take part in dozens of small, low-stakes interactions, meeting far more people than they would in the first weeks on their own.

The activities are active, inclusive, and non-competitive, so students can participate whether they are outgoing, introverted, international, first-in-family, or still unsure where they fit. Senior students are trained as peer leaders, so new students see a campus where people look out for each other.

That is why universities use Playfair as more than a welcome activity. It is a practical way to create belonging early, strengthen peer connection, and help students begin university with more people, more confidence, and more reasons to come back.

The main event · On campus

Ninety minutes. A hall full of strangers. Connected by the end to each other and the place.

This is the heart of what we do. Playfair gets students moving, laughing, talking, and meeting people they would not have met on their own. It is a shared experience that gets everyone involved, quickly and comfortably, so connection starts right away.

What it actually looks like

Warm, high-energy, and impossible to sit out of.

Orientation leaders and first-year students raising their hands and cheering in a line on the athletic field at dusk

Playfair brings students together through audience participation, non-competitive games, and dynamic team-building, all designed to create school spirit, wellbeing, and a sense of campus unity and belonging. It is genuinely great fun, but it is not just entertainment.

Playfair helps students meet each other, feel part of the room, and begin to see the campus as their community. The Playfair facilitator also weaves in important strategies on wellbeing, multicultural awareness, and community support.

At Playfair, new students learn what they have in common. In one activity, students get into threes and race to find everything they share. Every time they land on a commonality, they jump up and shout it out together. In another, pairs invent a secret handshake to swap when they next cross paths in the lunch queue or a chemistry lecture. And in another, students reflect and share on questions like who has inspired them and what moments have shaped them.

Playfair is also a leadership training. At each event a minimum of twenty senior students are trained by the Playfair facilitator to take a leadership role during the programme. On campuses that bring Playfair year after year, those leaders are often the students who first experienced it as new students themselves. Now they get to help create that same welcome for someone else.

First few minutes

Big-room energisers

Playful, whole-room activities take the pressure out of meeting someone new. Everyone is in from the first minute.

Warming up

Rotating partners

Students keep changing partners through quick, high-energy exchanges, so they meet people beyond the few they already know.

Halfway in

Small-group moments

Students gather in smaller groups to share stories from their lives, like the story behind their name. These quieter, more personal prompts help turn quick introductions into real connection.

Throughout

Your seniors, leading

Playfair will train your senior students as peer leaders and weave them into the event, so new students see this is a place where people look out for each other.

Start to finish

Built for everyone

Every activity is inclusive and celebratory. Introverts, international students, and first-in-family students feel just as welcome as anyone.

After the event

Friendships that stick

The groups that form in the first ninety minutes often continue long after orientation week. We have even had students tell us years later they met their spouse during Playfair!

Good to know

What we need from you.

Almost nothing. Playfair is built to drop into orientation week with very little setup on your side.

When students can't all be in the same room.

On campus is the main event. But some students can't be there in person, especially international, remote, and off-campus students. Playfair Online brings the same live, upbeat, and community energy through the screen, so nobody starts the year on the outside.

  • The same live, facilitated, Playfair energy
  • Whole-cohort moments plus smaller breakout rooms for more personalized connection
  • Runs on the tools you already use, on a laptop or a phone, wherever students are
How it runs

Big room, small rooms, repeat.

A live Playfair facilitator hosts the whole cohort together, then moves students in and out of fast, friendly breakout rooms, until a screen full of strangers starts to feel like a group.

One big welcome

Everyone starts together in a single, high-energy room, hosted live.

Real games, not small talk

Students play quick, playful games that help them meet each other without awkward introductions.

Quieter moments too

In small groups, students share the kind of stories that turn a face on a screen into someone they know.

Flexible format

Playfair Online can run on its own or alongside an in-person Playfair.

Playfair for conferences & teams

75% of conference attendees say networking is their main reason for attending. Most events still leave that to chance.

People come to conferences, offsites, and team days hoping to meet people, have purposeful conversations, and feel part of something larger than their own role or organisation. But too often, connection is left to a name badge, a coffee queue, or a few minutes of awkward networking between sessions. Playfair makes those connections happen on purpose.

What it is

Connection, built into the room.

Playfair is a live, facilitator-led experience that uses comedy, audience participation, and non-competitive interaction to connect a whole room at once. It works with a ten-person leadership offsite, or a conference floor of a thousand.

Playfair gets people out of receive-mode and into the room with each other. In one facilitated session, strangers become people who have actually met, shared a laugh, learned something about each other, and have a reason to keep talking through every break that follows. It is structured enough to feel safe, active enough to shift the energy, and human enough to make connection feel natural rather than forced.

Why it works

The opening session sets the tone.

Begin with a keynote and people stay in listening mode. Start with Playfair and they are switched on and contributing, connected to the room before the programming begins.

Instead of awkward small talk, Playfair creates dozens of low-stakes introductions in minutes. People meet through shared stories, playful moments, and simple activities that make it easier to keep talking later.

That warmth carries into the rest of the programme. Keynotes land better, breakouts go deeper, and the hallway conversations are rich from day one.

Where it fits

One format, many moments.

Conference openers

Set the tone before the first keynote and help delegates connect from the start.

Team days & offsites

Build trust and shared learning across departments, regions and levels of seniority.

Graduate & new-hire inductions

Help new starters feel part of the team from day one.

Leadership programmes & retreats

Create the conditions for openness, reflection, and stronger participation.

Led by practitioners

The play is never just play.

Sessions are led by facilitators who are also experienced leadership and coaching practitioners, people who understand group dynamics, business contexts, and what makes teams and leadership work. A simple activity becomes a live lesson in how people listen, solve problems together, and celebrate each other's wins.

From the field

Don't just take our word for it.

Students feel it. Campuses see it.

Wherever Playfair runs, the feedback is usually immediate: students are laughing, meeting each other, and leaving with dozens of more connections than when they arrived. Here are a few words from the people who brought Playfair to their campus:
